Shillong, May 14: A nursing student (21)from West Garo Hills allegedly hanged herself in the hostel of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, on Wednesday.
A statement by RIMS Media Cell said, “It is with deep sorrow that the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal condole the tragic death of a fourth-semester B.Sc. nursing student Ms. Abiel Sachiana Ch. Marak, a native of Rongram in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya on the morning of Wednesday, May 14, 2025. The unfortunate incident occurred at Hostel No. 2 of Leibaklei house within the institute around 8:30 AM. A case of Unnatural Death (UD) has been registered at Lamphel Police Station under UD Case No. 8/LPS/2025, dated May 14, 2025 and matter is under investigation”.
According to RIMS, the old hostel was not used following a fire incident around 3 years ago.
A police official said on phone that though the police do not suspect any foul play, post mortem examination will ascertain the cause of death.
Police have already contacted the family members.
A state government official said as per the instructions of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, an Additional Deputy Commissioner was entrusted to take the family members to RIMS for providing support.
