Off-roading puts Mawlyndep in Ri Bhoi on adventure tourism map
Shillong, Oct 26: The quiet village of Mawlyndep in Ri Bhoi district has suddenly emerged on the tourism map after it played host to an adrenaline-filled 4×4 off-road motorsport event organised by the Ahor Club. The event attracted a large number of visitors and motorsport enthusiasts who travelled from various parts of Meghalaya and neighbouring states to witness the challenging mud-track competition.
The off-road meet featured modified four-wheel-drive vehicles manoeuvring through extremely rugged terrain — including slippery mud pits, deep ruts and steep inclines — putting both driver skill and machine endurance to the ultimate test. Villagers lined the route in large numbers as the roaring engines and high-torque vehicles powered through the natural landscape, transforming Mawlyndep into a live motorsport arena.
Local organisers said the event was aimed not only at promoting adventure sports but also at showcasing Mawlyndep’s potential as a rural eco-tourism destination. Visitors expressed excitement at discovering a new offbeat location suitable for adventure travel, photography and weekend exploration.
With the success of this first major motorsport activity, residents and organisers hope that Mawlyndep will continue to host similar high-profile adventure events that can boost local livelihood opportunities and draw sustained tourism to the region.
