‘Operation Honeymoon’: Sonam brought to Shillong

Sohra supports victim, ILP demand grows louder in city

Shillong, June 10: Sonam Raghuvanshi, the key suspect in the murder case of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi was brought to Shillong from Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesdsy early hours.

Sonam was taken to Sadar police station in the city and then to Ganesh Das hospital for medical check up.

She will be prouduced before the lower court on Wednesday.

Others who are accused in the crime will also be brought on Wednesday.

East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said the official code name for the investigation related to the crime is known as ‘operation honeymoon’.

Raja was killed while the couple was on honeymoon in Sohra.

Earlier in the day, a gathering of people in Sohra, while extending support to the murder victim Raja , welcomed the tourists

The  public rally was to protest against the attempt to tarnish the image of Meghalaya and Sohra over the murder.

Thousands of people from all walks of life participated at the rally at Sohra. It was followed by a candlelight vigil at Saitsohpen to pay respect to Raja a resident of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, who was murdered at Weisawdong falls.

Hima Sohra residents wanted the national media and those involved in defaming the place to tender an apology within 24 hours failing which they will take legal action.

Sohra legislator Gavin Miguel Mylliem said people are hurt by the episode of tarnishing the image of Sohra.

Former KHADC chief and Sohra MDC Titosstarwell Chyne also expressed concern that not only the national media but some local people were also involved in tarnishing the image of Sohra.

“Therefore, this rally is also to protest against local people from other regions, who are engaging in slandering against Sohra. If we are demanding the national media to apologize for defaming our land, we should also demand people from our own state to tender an apology within 24 hours. We know your names. On failing, we will be left with no option but to take legal action against you,” he said.

At Khyndailad in the city, the protest was called by senior citizen Mary Victoria Marwein, a resident of Lawsohtun.

The event saw the participation of people from all walks of life including leaders from different civil society organizations.

President of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Roykupar Synrem wanted  the state government to implement ILP for regulating the entry of people from outside into the state. He said ILP would act as a strong deterrent for people who come to the state with the intention to commit crime.
