Opposition leader targets BJP over divisive measures

Shillong, Jan 7: Mukul Sangma on Friday stressed the need for respecting personal choices and protecting democracy as he hinted at the right wing’s attempt to polarise the country.

The AITC legislature party leader said personal liberty and the inclusive character of the country should be protected under any circumstances “for the sustainability of the democracy that we so cherish”.

He also referred to the Assam incident where information on religious conversion and the number of churches established in respective districts in the past year was sought recently.

“… Law and order is a state subject. Has the chief minister (Himanta Biswa Sarma) taken any decision on the government employees whose order was in complete deviation from any policy decision of the government? These are natural questions for every common man and citizen,” he added.

Sangma asserted that religion is a citizen’s personal choice and that it is being infringed upon in the current time. He flagged the concern that the State is allowing such impunity, and said, “It is a threat to the inclusive character of this great nation.”
