Over 10 k people affected due to natural calamities
Shillong, April 20: Over 10,000 people were affected due to the recent natural calamities in the state.
Minister in-charge Revenue and Disaster Management Kyrmen Shylla told reporters on Wednesday that 10,263 people have been affected while 160 houses were fully damaged and 2199 partly.
While four persons died, two were injured in rain-related incidents in the state from April 1 to 19, Shylla said.
Two deaths were due to landslides at Mawlat under Mawkynrew Block in East Khasi Hills district and two were from Garo Hills including one drowning at Baghmara block.
Shylla said Ri Bhoi has been badly affected by nature’s fury.
Several houses in 47 villages in Umsning Block and 29 villages in Bhoirymbong block were affected due to the cyclonic storm on April 14.
He said that assessment is still being carried out to know the actual number of houses affected due to the incident.
Six cattle also died due to lightning strike in Amlarem Block, West Jaintia Hills.
The minister has also urged the citizens to stay alert and take all safety measures during such incidents.
