Shillong, June 19: With over 9,000 residents bring affected, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma took review meeting with all the districts to assess the situation, review preparedness and analyse specific additional requirements of the districts to meet needs and provide relief to the affected population in view of the flood situation following the impact of the South West monsoon rain.
A total of 171 villages were affected and 9577 population felt the impact of monsoon rains, 135 houses were damaged. Following the progress of the monsoons over the last one week, 46 infrastructures and 27.303 ha of crops were damaged.
Conrad asked the district officers to remain alert and focus more for people living in vulnerable areas to ensure no life is lost. “All departments are to work for immediate restoration of basic requirements of the people like electricity and roads for smooth flow of traffic and to ensure sufficient stock of relief materials and inform the department of any requirement”, Conrad said.
Excess rain in state
As per IMD report, the rainfall from June 1 till date is excess for the state with 59 per cent departure from the normal, which is due to active monsoon in the Bay of Bengal.
The state government is monitoring the situation as the monsoon rains damaged infrastructure, farmlands, triggered landslides, tree falling incidents, flash floods as well damaging most homes across the districts.
Status of all districts as released by Govt
In East Khasi Hills
- Due to incessant rain and sudden rise in flash flood water one life was lost to drowning (L) Probinus Warbah at Umrynjah River. Ex-gratia of Rs.4 lakhs will be released to the next of kin.
- Damages were caused by rainfall, lightning and landslides to residential houses, roads at Mawryngkneng and Mawsynram C&RD Blocks, Wahtyllong Nongjri Elaka and Pomlum- Laitlyngkot Road.
- The District Administration with the teams from Police/ Fire Service/ SDRF, PWD could retrieve the body of the deceased, clearing of debris and giving immediate assistance to the affected people as per SDRF norms of relief within 48 hours.
In East Garo Hills,
- 13 (Thirteen) Villages with total population of 92 (Ninety Two) were affected wherein 6 (Six) houses were fully damaged and 18 (Eighteen) houses are reported to be partially damaged due to incessant rainfall.
- Assessment is under progress for fund release to the affected families.
- In addition to the above-mentioned damages, steps are being taken to clear roads obstructed by landslides. Readiness for emergency Relief Camps identified.
In West Khasi Hills,
- 1 person died of lightning (L) Shri Kantly Maram at Nongkroh, Ex-gratia payment released to next of kin.
- 2 pucca houses partially damaged at Tiehsaw and Lawrapha affected 11 family members and relief under process.
- Landslides at Umlipoi and Mawkaton villages roads, already cleared.
- Wooden bridge washed away by water at Ryndi river, alternative route has been made.
In West Jaintia Hills,
- Reports of minor landslides and tree branches falling were received from Jowai and Kharkana and addressed within hours.
- In Sankhat village, Amlarem subdivision, a house in a vulnerable spot was evacuated and essential supplies given to the affected.
- No reports of extensive house damage.
In South Garo Hills, on 17th and 18th June 2024, Very heavy rainfall in South Garo Hills District affected the normal lives of the general public resulting in flood and land slide in some places and due to which power was disrupted in the District.
- Relief Camp has been setup at Karukol Jalaigre Govt. L. P. School and 7 household were evacuated to the relief camp and GR has already been distributed to the affected families at Karukol.
- Washed away road at Darang Boldak is under restoration process and direction has been given to the Executive Engineer PWD Road to restore the same at the earliest.
- Partially damaged NH road at Siju Gangga gittim was already restored by the PWD NH on 17th June 2024 itself.
- All the landslides at Rongsha Awe area has already been cleared by the PWD NH on the day itself.
In South West Garo Hills
- 2 (two) nos houses partially damaged, 7 numbers location of PWD roads partially blocked, uprooted trees, road formation and Bridges and culvert approaches damaged, 7 nos. FIP projects damaged and 4 nos. animals died.
- Temporary restoration measures taken up to open traffic.
- House damaged repairs assistance fund will be released immediately
- Animal loss assistance fund proposal forwarded.
In West Garo Hills
- In Dharamsala, Tura- 4 families of 12 persons were shifted to Relief centre on 16/6/2024 and affected households at Selsella C&RD Block provided GR for 3 days
- Distributed Tarpaulin at Araimile, Bonepa Atilla, Chitoktak & Dobasipara
In East Jaintia Hills
- Landslide that occurred (a) along the NH-6 at Sonapyrdi, Kuliang and pyrtakuna, and (b) Road towards Pala under Saipung C&RD Block had been cleared within 2-3 hours and vehicular movement are plying normally.
- With the possibility of flood like situation, the District Administration is fully prepared for any relief Assistance in village like Borghat and Natbor.
- To stop the heavy downpour of water from the Hilltop on the stretch of the National Highway – 6 at Lumshnong, Steps had been taken to ensure uninterrupted vehicular movement while closely coordinating with the Mining & Geology Department Team for technical support.
- The District is fully alert to any eventualities and is ready for necessary action.
In North Garo Hills
- 15 villages comprising of 32 houses with total population of 132 were affected wherein 30 houses are partially and 2 houses are fully damaged.
- Assessment is under progress and based on the availability of fund, relief for house damaged shall be released.
In Eastern West Khasi Hills
- Landslides under Mairang C&RD Block and Mawthadraishan C&RD Block caused damages to 4 (four) houses.
- 0.003 ha (approx) of agriculture crops were damaged due to landslides at Ksehmawnai village under Mairang C&RD Block
- About 15 ha. (approx) area of Chayote and Paddy was damaged due to heavy rainfall and strong wind at Nongsohpi village under Mairang C&RD Block, Mawkamoit and Myriaw Village under Mawthadraishan village
- Damage assessments to houses and crops are being carried out by the respective Block Offices, DAO.
- Relief assistance to the affected families provided as per the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) norms
In South West Khasi Hills
- 17 Villages and 143 population were affected with 25 houses damaged
- IRT Activated at the District & Blocks
- Distribution of Tarpaulin for the seriously affected households.
In Ri Bhoi, no damages reported, however, the District Administration is on alert to take necessary action as and when required.
