Pahalgam attack: India suspends water treaty with Pakistan

Shillong, April 23 (Agencies); A day after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.
The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting on security on Thursday. At least 26, including tourists, were killed in the attack in Pahalgam, a major tourist site in south Kashmir, on Wednesday.
The suspension of the treaty, which was signed in 1960, would mean that water supply from the Indus and its distributaries to Pakistan would be suspended. This is a major source of water supply to the neighbouring country.
India also shut down the Attari-Wagah border with immediate effect. Also, Pakistani nationals will not be permitted to travel to India.
Meanwhile, several locals protested in Kashmir against a section of the media for painting a different picture of the violence and creating community divide. “Local reporter from Kashmir was explaining Security lapse, 2000 tourists at single spot & no security was available. Immediately AajTak cut him from the live feed. Godi media hiding truth & disrespecting martyr,’ said a social media user on X.
Media reports said at least five terrorists opened fire on people on Wednesday. Among them, two were “local militants”.
