Panicked by open sale of knives, district administration imposes ban

Shillong, Aug 2: The East Khasi Hills district administration has banned the open sale and display of sharp objects, including knives.

In an order issued on Tuesday, the East Khasi Hills district administration said the order was necessitated following reports that a number of vendors are selling sharp objects, ie., daos, knives, etc along the roadside in Khyndai Lad (Police Bazaar) and Jail Road.

“Such open sale and display of sharp tools could pose a threat as they could be picked up by miscreants and used against shopkeepers and pedestrians”, the order said.

The district magistrate promulgated the order under section 144 CrPC prohibiting the sale.

“Sale of such objects may be done only inside the shops under closed display”, the administration said.

This order comes into force with immediate effect and will remain till further orders.

What about Iewduh ?

Questions are being asked about Iewduh ( Bara Bazar) and other open markets in the city and on the outskirts where there are displays of such sharp objects, including knives.

The curious order of the district administration, however, exempted several markets which can have sharp objects and pose threats to the residents.
