The Congress and the TMC have organised separate press conferences in Shillong and Umroi several hours before the campaign ended.

The AICC media coordinator Bobbeeta Sharma said “We would like to thank all our friends from the media for their cooperation in attending our regular press conferences and also for the coverages given. The Congress party always believes that a free and fair press is critical in the functioning of a democracy. And we appreciate Meghalaya press for trying to maintain their independent and neutral stand amidst the pressures of intimidation from powerful quarters”, she said.

Sharma said the party has always observed that the atmosphere of campaign in Meghalaya is like a festival with music and dance being an integral part of the campaign.

“I think it is a wonderful and unique from the violence that is witnessed in some parts of the country during elections. This spirit of Meghalaya should be emulated by others as well”, she said.

Of course it is unfortunate that some incidents of violence were witnessed in Garo Hills and ‘we condemn such incidents’, she said.

The Congress hoped that Meghalaya will always remain musical, “will always remain peaceful not only during elections but always and forever’.

She said the Congress is aware that the citizens of Meghalaya are politically conscious and hoped that they will cast their vote in favour of the Congress party on February 27  as Congress has always stood and worked for a peaceful and developed Meghalaya.

Another media coordinator Advocate Mathew Antony said the party is committed to fulfilling the manifesto promises.

MPCC general secretary Sanjay Das said the Congress is the only party in the state which is committed to protecting the rights and interests of the indigenous people of Meghalaya and the state has made the most progress only when Congress ruled Meghalaya.

Addressing a press conference at the Umroi Party Office in the morning, MP and Leader ofAITC Parliamentary Party in Rajya Sabha Derek O’Brien said, “We came here with humility and honesty and the people of Meghalaya welcomed us with open arms”.

Expressing his gratitude towards the support of the people, Meghalaya TMC Vice  president and Umroi candidate George B Lyngdoh said, “In just a few months’ time, there has been a miraculous rise of the party due to the support of the people.
