5 women die as van ferrying Trinamool supporters meet with accident near Kharkutta

Shillong, Feb 20: Trinamool Congress’s Meghalaya state president Charles Pyngrope said late on Monday night that the party stands by the families of the victims of the accident near Kharkutta earlier in the day.

When asked whether the party would provide financial assistance to the bereaved families, Pyngrope, who is Trinamool Congress’s candidate from Nongthymmai, said, “Irrespective of party affiliations, it will be our responsibility to provide our help to the bereaved families. The party as well as the state stand by them.”

Five persons died and several were injured on Monday morning when a pick-up van met with an accident near Kharkutta in North Garo Hills. All the deceased were women. Reports said that the van was carrying Trinamool Congress supporters to a public meeting.

The Meghalaya unit of BJP tweeted, “Deputy Speaker of Assam @DrNumal ji met the kin of the 5 deceased women who died of a tragic car accident this morning at Kharkutta. They were en route to a public meeting of the TMC. He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed for the eternal rest of the souls of the deceased.”

Emergency personnel reached the spot and evacuated those injured, many of which. The incident took place at about 11 am. They were on their way to an election rally when the incident took place. The Trinamool candidate from Kharkutta constituency is Cherak W. Momin.
