Pervez Musharraf passes away

Dubai, Feb 5(UNI): Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf passed away at a hospital in Dubai on Sunday after prolonged illness.

He was 79 years old and hospitalised due to ill-health since the past two months.

Gen. Musharraf had served as the 10th Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee from 1998 to 2001 and the seventh Chief of Army Staff from 1998 to 2007. He was the president of Pakistan after he assumed power post a military coup in 1999.

Musharraf had been declared a fugitive in the former prime minister Benazir Bhutto murder case and Red Mosque cleric killing case. He was facing a treason case for suspending the Constitution in 2007.

The former military ruler had left for Dubai in March 2016 for medical treatment and had not returned since.

Musharraf was said to be suffering from a rare disease called amyloidosis. This disease affects connective tissues and organs, inhibiting normal functioning.

Gen. Musharraf was known as the architect of the Kargil war, he ordered Pakistani soldiers to enter India in the garb militants in an effort to cut off Leh from Srinagar.
