Planning board takes steps to reduce traffic congestion

Shillong, Aug 25:The Meghalaya State Planning Board (MSPB) will submit recommendations to the state government for widening existing roads, construction of new roads and other measures to address the city’s traffic problem.
The chairman of the board, Metbah Lyngdoh, accompanied by headmen, conducted inspections to several locations in the city on Monday.
The headmen of Lumbatngen, Sawlad and Lapalang accompanied Metbah.
Lyngdoh told reporters that the board will take up with the state government to widen existing roads, besides constructing new roads to solve traffic congestion
The board has identified the Saw Lad junction to Lapalang and Lumbatngen, as well as the road near the Assam Regiment, as critical areas for improvement.
“The board has noticed that there is a defence land and those belonging to private land owners. We have decided to examine this matter and put up our recommendation to the state government for exploring the possibility of acquiring land for the widening of these roads
The Umpling-Dongsharum road is crucial for reducing traffic congestion in the Rynjah area, as it will connect important junctions from MES to Demseiniong and from Rynjah market to Nongrim Hills.
“We will examine this after discussion with the PWD and accordingly submit our recommendations to the state government,” he said.
