Shillong, June 26: Police arrested two persons who were involved in the assault of a woman in Dadenggre in West Garo Hills.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham Sangma said upon noticing the viral video in circulation, the West Garo Hills Police made efforts to verify the video and confirmed that incident of assault on a girl occurred on June 25 at Lower Teksragre village, Damal A-sim.
“In view of the same, a police team led by the Senior Police Officer, immediately proceeded to the place of occurrence today and identified the victim as well as the accused who were close relatives of the victim. It is to be informed all concerned that 2 (two) out of 4 (four) accused persons involved in this incident have been arrested. Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused persons involved in this instant case”, the police official said.
A case is being registered at Tura Women PS in this regard under relevant section of law, he said.
“We request everyone to refrain from sharing the video further to protect the privacy and dignity of the victim. We also urge the public to remain calm and allow the law enforcement agencies to handle the situation”, the statement said.
The Meghalaya State Commission for Women has condemned the brutal assault of the woman. “The commission is taking suo motu cognisance of the case and today afternoon the Vice Chairperson, Meghalaya State Commission for Women and member met the Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills for thorough investigation of the case and he informed the Commission that arrests have been made”, said a statement by the commission. An official letter on the same has been sent via email to the office of the SP, West Garo Hills, Tura. “The commission will be meeting the victim and will be following up for further necessary action to be done”, the panel said.
