Shillong, Aug 22: DGP Idashisha Nongrang said on Friday that there are attempts by militants to regroup.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, the DGP said that there are reports about fresh recruitment and regrouping attempts by militants.
“Yes, we are having reports of new recruitment, but exactly the scale and who exactly are these people who are being recruited and trying to re-group and form again, that we don’t know,” the DGP said, adding that the matter is under close watch, though details remain sketchy at this stage.
The police chief said the concerns were raised by the Leader of the Opposition, Mukul Sangma, during the recently held meeting of the State Security Commission.
“He is the Leader of the Opposition, obviously, he knows a lot of things which we are also keeping track of. The Leader of the Opposition had also raised this issue about youth, whether educated or uneducated, trying to join militancy, trying to make a comeback. He had also raised this issue in the last State Security Commission meeting, which was held, if I remember correctly, a few months back, and those concerns were noted,” Nongrang said.
Concern over influx
The DGP said both the police and the BSF are working together to prevent the entry of migrants.
“In the bordering villages, whether it is the western or the eastern range, we are working very closely with the BSF. We have had numerous coordination meetings, and we have increased the Mobile Check Posts both by the BSF and the state police,” she said.
The pressure groups issued warnings that they will take the law into their own hands if the government does not prevent the influx.
In response to the threat, Nongrang said, “It is a free country, they can say whatever they want. They have threatened as of now to take law into their own hands. Right? And as and when they do that, the law will take its own course,” she said.
Territorial Army
The state will seek clarification from its Mizoram counterpart on the Territorial Army to know which ministry is dealing with it.
Nongrang said there is still confusion regarding the reported approval for Mizoram.
“We are examining what exactly is approved for Mizoram because, as per reports for Mizoram, the approval has come from the Union Home Minister. But as you are aware, the Territorial Army functions under the Indian Territorial Army Act, which is with the Ministry of Defence, and there is a little bit of confusion there. I am trying to get some clarity from my Mizoram counterpart. We will see what exactly has been approved for them,” Nongrang said.
