Police bust extortion racket run through facebook

Shillong, Aug 23: Police arrested four persons in connection with an extortion c inase through social media in East Jaintia Hills.

East Jaintia Hills SP JS Dhanoa said that aon August 19, information was received that a resident of Lumshnong police station  jurisdiction got calls from an unknown person who demanded money from him by putting his life under threat if he were not to comply with the demand. On August  21, the resident was tailed and around 3 pm , he was found parking at Dosti Hotel, Ladrymbai when two suspects jumped into his vehicle. Sensing the commission of a cognizable crime, the police team nearby arrested the the duo.

Upon preliminary interrogation, they revealed that they were collecting money on behalf of someone who befriended them on facebook. On August 22  around  6 pm, police team apprehended Issei Sungoh(in picture), son of Iaphaida Sungoh of Dkhiah East (Ladsutnga) from his residence.

Police said it was him, who made the phone calls to the victim. He also befriended the two accused on facebook and directed them to collect the demanded money from the victim. Sungoh was arrested earlier by East Jaintia police as one of the main accused in the IED explosion case at Khliehriat Police Reserve in  2021. Later, he was released on bail by the  court.

In this connection, Lumshnong PS Case No 44(08)2023 U/s 386/120 B IPC has been registered.

Besides Sungoh, Daruis Pakem (19),  son of Rajesh Pale, resident of Moolaitbri Sumer, East Jaintia Hills and two juveniles were apprehended.
