“We are also taking up the matter with the Deputy Commissioner so that the relatives can identify the body which is kept at Khliehriat Civil Hospital morgue after post-mortem”, the SP said.

The semi-decomposed body was found on August 26 evening at the plantation in Dona Bhoi area of the district which is 1.5 km away from the international border.

One Bangladesh passport bearing the name of Ishaque Ali Khan Panna was recovered from the body.

Panna was the general secretary of Chhatra League, the student wing of Awami League.

Media reports had said on August 25 that the student leader died in Meghalaya after fleeing from Bangladesh.

Many awami league leaders are on the run after their leader and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted.

According to earlier news reports, a relative of Panna had said the latter slipped from a ‘hill in Shillong’ and died of heart attack while the information received by another relative was that he entered Meghalaya through Tamabil in Sylhet close to Dawki.

Earlier, the police chiefs of both West and East Jaintia Hills and the BSF had said they did not have any  information regarding the matter.
