Police hired private vehicles during Covid violating motor vehicle act: RTI activist

Shillong, Oct 11: RTI activist Disparsing Rani has alleged violation of motor vehicle act in hiring private vehicles during Covid by the home department.

Over Rs 10 crore is pending to be paid to the owners of the private vehicles.

Rani suspects collusion between the private vehicle owners and the police.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Rani said that as per the replies to RT queries, 156 private vehicles were requisitioned by the state government in violation of section 60 of Motor Vehicle Act (1988).

Hiring of private vehicles by the police is prohibited but only commercial vehicles are allowed, Rani said.

He also referred to the adverse remarks of the Central Vigilance Commission regarding the violation of motor vehicle act.

Rani said Ri Bhoi and South West Garo Hills did not furnish the required information and as per the replies from nine other districts, the home department is yet to pay RsĀ  10,45,78,093 to the owners of private vehicles
