Police hold peace meet with city Meitei-Kuki communities
Shillong, May 5: Meghalaya police on Friday organised a peace meet between Kuki and Meitei residents at Nagaland Community Hall at Nongrim Hills, to ensure peace in the state.
Director General of Police (DGP) LR Bishnoi met the leaders of Meitei-Kuki residents here a day after 16 persons belonging to the two communities were apprehended by the state police following a group fight in Nongrim Hills.
“After the unfortunate and tragic incidents in Imphal and other parts of Manipur, we have decided that there should not be any misunderstanding among the citizens of both communities living in Shillong and other parts of Meghalaya. Therefore, we thought it wise as a preventive step to invite the community leaders and student leaders of both communities,” Bishnoi told reporters.
The DGP said during the meeting on Friday the leaders of both the communities have assured to maintain peace and order and to fully cooperate with the state police.
The DGP said the 16 people were apprehended as a preventive detention and after the execution of bonds, they were allowed to go back since it was a minor scuffle due to misunderstanding.
Six areas identified
The police identified six areas where citizens of both communities are residing in Shillong. These include Happy Valley, Nongthymmai, Nongshilliang, Laitumkhrah and Madanrting.
“In such areas, we have already drawn a plan to execute and strengthen mobile patrolling in those areas,” the DGP said.
Bishnoi added that the police personnel are in touch with the administration of the NEHU and with the senior police officers of Manipur.
“Today I have spoken to the DGP of Manipur and they have assured us to provide full safety to the citizens. I have spoken to DGP and lots of forces have reached there and within a couple of days the situation will become normal,” he added.
