Shillong, May 4: Police are probing the twin lynching cases in Eastern West Khasi Hills to know the lapses.
Two local male persons were lynched by a mob of around 1500 in Umthlong Village, on May 3 around 5.30 pm.
Police said the officer-in charge of Mairang police station had received a telephonic information around 4.05 pm on May 3 from the Sordar of Umthlong Village to the effect that two persons were being held by the village durbar on the ground that they tried to rape a minor girl aged 17 years at her residence. Thereafter they were caught and brought to Community Hall by people of the village around 1.30 pm. However, when the magistrate and the police arrived at the village around 4.55 pm, the crowd that were gathered didn’t allow the magistrate and the police to take the accused into their custody.
“While the magistrate was negotiating with some members of the crowd to allow the police to take the two accused persons into custody, all of sudden the remaining members of public rushed towards the community hall and broke open the door & lynched the duo. Thereafter, the mob dispersed”, the police said.
Instantly, the magistrate called for an ambulance and the two injured persons were taken to Tirot Sing Civil Hospital, Mairang. On arrival at the hospital around 7 pm, one of the injured, Melar Kurbah (35), a resident of Demthring village, East Khasi G was declared brought dead and the other, Hasmendra Kharkylliang (50) a resident of Shyrwang village, Eastern West Khasi Hills was referred to Shillong, but on reaching Shillong Civil Hospital he was declared brought dead.
In this regard, two FIRs were received in Mairang PS and two cases registered
1. Mairang PS C/No 24(05)2024 u/s 376D/324 IPC, &
2. Mairang PS C/No 25(05)2024 u/s 120B/302/34 IPC
Police said the Sordar of Umthlong village came to know of this incident around 1.30pm but informed the police only at 4.05 pm.
