Police rescue mentally ill man thought to be ‘menshohnoh’

Shillong, Oct 14: Police rescued a mentally challenged man from an angry mob that suspected him of being a menshohnoh (sorcerer) on Monday night.

The victim, identified as Arnikstar Rytathiang (35), a resident of Wo Mawthlong village, was found wandering in Kynroh Nongbri village around 9 pm on Monday (October 13).

The Sohiong police team went to the village on a tip-off and found Rytathiang being guarded by village elders and the Sordar of Umthlong village to the Kynroh Nongbri community hall.

The mob had gathered outside, pelting stones and demanding to hand over the victim.

After rescuing Rytathiang, the police took him for a medical examination at Sohiong Civil Hospital, where the medical officer said the victim was mentally challenged and a patient at MIMHANS Shillong.

A case has been registered at Mawngap PS for further investigation and legal action, SP Vivek Syiem said.
