“Though there was no sign of sexual assault on the child but there was a motive, and that takes a bit of time because we have got incriminating evidence of the accused 13-year-old boy being exposed to a lot of adult content,” he said.

The 13-year-old boy, a neighbour and frequent visitor of the victim’s family, is currently in a juvenile home, after he admitted to taking the girl to a nearby construction site, from where her body was found on September 15.

“The investigation, in fact, had already ascertained that this 13-year-old was the one who was involved in the murder. It had taken some time also because the accused is a child and cannot be treated like a normal or adult criminal so, it is only at the monitoring of child welfare committee that interrogation and examination of the child is done and as we got permission, we had examined the child in the presence of counsellor, we had ascertained that the child is involved. In the beginning, it was ascertained he was the sole person who was with the child when the child died, the child died of drowning, and we had to ascertain whether it was an accident or homicidal and later we ascertained also after further examination that it was homicidal,” the SP said.

Another pending case

The police are also on the job to identify perpetrators involved in The murder of seven-year-old Kyrshanbor Kharmudai.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is still on its way to investigate and identify who is involved in the murder of the child.”

Syiem described the case as complex, with multiple persons of interest being investigated.

“We have got the post-mortem report. We are waiting for more forensic reports to get more clues. At this juncture, I will not be able to say anything because there are lots of persons of interest,” he said.

According to him, the post-mortem report indicates that the cause of death was due to suffocation.

The child’s body was recovered from Mawpat on October 9, a day after he went missing from his Nongrah residence
