Shillong, April 28: The Achik State People’s Front has asked the Executive Committee of GHADC to cancel the appointment of MDC Rakesh Sangma as chairman of a committee.
His status is equivalent to that of Chief Executive Member.
In a letter to the executive committee, ASPF said any action that dilutes tribal representation or introduces ambiguity in eligibility strikes at the very root of the framework.
“The present appointment risks reducing the constitutional safeguards to a mere paper tiger, ineffective in practice.It sets a dangerous precedent that may snowball into a systemic erosion of tribal autonomy. The council must not play with fire by allowing such deviations from established norms, the NGO said.
“The appointment of Rakesh A. Sangma (alias Rakesh Newar) be declared invalid and set aside, being legally unsustainable”, it said.
The NGO wanted a competent authority to verify his Scheduled Tribe status through a transparent and legally recognised process.
