Pressure groups end protest, call it Garo Awakening Day

Shillong, Feb 28: The pressure groups from Garo Hills have decided to suspend the agitation and welcomed the decision of the GHADC CEM Rakesh Newar Sangma to quit the post.
“We welcome the matured decision of the GHADC CEM”, FKJGP president Pritam Marak said on phone from Tura.
He said the day will be remembered as Garo Awakening Day and will be observed every year.
‘We are suspending the agitation as it was fior almost one month from February 1″, Marak said.
To a question, Marak said other pending issues especially the need to have separate electoral rolls prohibiting non-Garos from taking part in council polls and the codification of customary laws will be followed up.
The groups protested against Rakesh as they alleged that though his mother is a Garo , he is following Nepali culture and tradition as his father is a Nepali.
However, Rakesh had termed the protest as politically motivated.
