Proposed academy to streamline teacher training programmes

Shillong, Nov 27: The State Cabinet has approved the establishment of a teacher training academy as an autonomous society under the Directorate of Education, Research and Training, aimed at enhancing teacher education, capacity building, and professional development.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Wednesday that the Meghalaya Teacher Training Academy will focus on providing specialised training to teachers across various levels. It will ensure professionals oversee the training process, allowing for more effective and targeted capacity building.

Currently, multiple government agencies and funding bodies conduct teacher training programmes, often with varying degrees of success. The new academy is expected to streamline these efforts.

“There are different funding agencies… for training of teachers and they all do the trainings at their own capacity… which sometimes does not yield the kind of results that we would want and hence one society would ensure that the focus is there at every agency or every programme that is there whether it is funding for teachers training, funds will be transferred to this society and training will be done at a professional level by this particular society,” Sangma said.
