Shillong, Dec 29: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) expressed condolences, anger, and condemnation regarding against the brutal killing of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, who succumbed to his injuries on December 26, 2025, following a racially motivated assault.l on December 9.
In a statement , the CoMSO chairman Roy Kupar Synrem viewed this as a part of a systematic and recurring pattern of violence faced by the people of the North East across various metropolitan hubs in India, including Bengaluru and Delhi.
“This heinous crime is not an isolated incident. Whether in Bengaluru, Dehradun, or Delhi, students and professionals from the North East continue to be subjected to derogatory slurs, physical violence, and institutional neglect. Anjel Chakma’s last words—”We are not Chinese, we are Indians”—stand as a haunting indictment of the deep-seated prejudice that persists in the mainland.
CoMSO, as a representative body of the indigenous voices of Meghalaya, stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Tripura and across the North East”,Synrem said.
The demands
Fast-Track Justice: “We urge the Government of Uttarakhand and the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure a fast-track trial for the accused. While five suspects have been apprehended, as per reports, the prime suspect must be brought to justice immediately to prevent further emboldenment of such elements”.
National Anti-Racism Law: “CoMSO strongly demand for the enactment of a comprehensive Anti-Racism Law. The current legal framework is insufficient to address the specific nature of hate crimes based on racial and ethnic features”.
Safety Protocols for NE Students: “We call upon the Central Government to issue strict directives to all State Governments to establish dedicated 24/7 “North East Helplines” and specialized police cells in every major city to ensure the safety of our students and working professionals”.
Accountability of Educational Hubs: “Institutions and local administrations must be held accountable for failing to foster a safe and inclusive environment for students from the North East”.
Synrem asserted that CoMSO will not remain silent while the youth are murdered for the way they look.
“If the mainland continues to treat us as outsiders, they are effectively pushing our people toward a sense of total alienation. We demand more than just ‘condolences’; we demand systemic change and the protection of our dignity as citizens of this country. CoMSO stands ready to join forces with other regional bodies of North East to launch a democratic agitation if concrete steps are not taken to address this rising tide of racial hatred against our people in mainland India”, Synrem added.
Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma , Tripura leader Pradyot Debbarma, among others had condemned the incident.
On December 27, Suhas Chakma, the founder of Chakma Development Foundation of India, had written to Union Home Minister for necessary action.
