Shillong, April 23: As many as 57 players are participating in the chess tournament organised by the All India Public Sector Sports Control Board.
The players are part of ten teams from member Public Sector Undertakings.
The trophy for the tournament was unveiled at the inauguration function held on April 22 at State Convention Centre, Shillong by Chief Guest, senior government official E Kharmalki in the presence of Gian Batra, General Secretary of the Board. Chairman Organising Committee Rishi Kant Bangwal, Airport Director Shillong, Ramesh Sachdeva, Consultant of All India Public Sector Sports Control Board land K.M. Warjri, President Meghalaya Chess Association.
The tournament will conclude on April 24.
The AIPSSCB established in 1987 is the apex body for conducting sports activities among Public Sector Undertakings/Autonomous Government Bodies , besides helping the sports persons to perform at national & International level by providing them required assistance through member organisations . Leading Public Sector Undertakings like Airports Authority of India, Oil India, Food Corporation of India, Life Insurance Corporation of India, BSNL, Air India, Canara Bank, Reserve Bank of India etc.which actively promote sports, are members of the AIPSSCB. Currently 25 organisations are active members of the Board.
The Board through its member organisations has made phenomenal contribution towards the promotion of sports in the country. The contribution of AIPSSCB and its member organisations has been highlighed when 9 officers of ONGC and IOC were conferred with Arjuna and Dhyanchand Awards in 2021.
AIPSSCB organises tournaments in various sports disciplines such as Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Carrom, Chess, Cricket, Football, Golf, Hockey, Kabaddi, Table Tennis and Volleyball at various venues in the country.
Awards are also given to the best undertakings every year on the occasion of AGM of the AIPSSCB.
The chess is one of the popular game in which there is large participation from member organisations. The quality of the tournament is high in view of several reputed national players participating in it. The event being conducted in Shillong has further attracted large participation.
The upcoming chess players who are associated with the member PSUs by way of employment/ scholarship / contract get the much needed experience while playing with national & international players and get a platform to showcase their prowess.
