Shillong, June 6: The state government is resorting to section 188 of the IPC to deal with the coal crimes which has scope only for punishment for two months or Rs 200 fine.
However, the MMDR Act has provision for imprisonment for seven years and Rs 2 lakh fine for violation.

The high court appointed judicial committee headed by justice (retired) BP Katakey said the mining and geology department should lodge complaints regarding violation of NGT and Supreme Court orders on illegal coal mining and its transportation.
He stressed the need of invoking the provisions of MMDR Act to deal with the violations.
