Conrad clarifies on the reason for delay in Games hosting

Shillong, Mar 22: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma told the Assembly on Wednesday that Meghalaya can host the National Games after the pending hosts get the opportunity.

Sangma was answering on behalf of Sports minister Shakliar Warjri, who is a greenhorn and the youngest MLA, to clarify the reason for Meghalaya not hosting the National Games, on the third day of the budget session.

Sangma said the reason had “nothing to do with infrastructure but with the sequence of states to be hosting the Games”. He was replying to a question raised by Congress MLA Celestine Lyngdoh.

Goa will host the 37th National Games in October this year. Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand are next in the queue of hosts.

“We organised the NE Olympic Games and it was very very successful and appreciated by all sports persinalitiesnin the region. So, it is not infrastructure for which we could not hold the National Games,” Sangma said.

Recently, the working president of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, John Kharshiing, said thee state may host the Games in 2025. A delegation from the state recently met Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha.
