Rain dampens immersion revelry

Shillong, Oct 2:Incessant rain dampened revelry during the immersion of idols at Polo on Thursday.

The rain also prevented the presence of a large number of devotees at the Polo Immersion Ghat.

As the water level rose, there were frequent announcements by the magistrates urging people not to step into the river along with the idols.

Over 60 idols were immersed, followed by the exchange of greetings by the devotees.

Central Puja Committee president Naba Bhattacharjee said due to the unusual rain during the immersion day, restrictions were imposed for the safety of the devotees.

According to a weather report, rainfall was 26.0 mm in Shillong.
In Sohra, it was 84.0 mm, and in Umiam, 17.1 mm.
The immersion started at 9.30 am and went on till late in the evening.

Bhattacharjee said the Durga Puja celebrations passed off peacefully and thanked the government machinery and the people for the successful puja celebrations.
