Restrictions on Hindu processions on Good Friday & Easter

Shillong, April 6: Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) vice president Thomas Passah on Thursday informed that the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills SC Sadhu has assured to cancel the permissions of Shree Hanuman Jayanti Utsav Samiti & RSS to hold processions in view of Good Friday and Easter respectively.

In its memorandum to the DC, the KHNAM had urged the district administration not to allow the  Shree Hanuman Jayanti Utsav Samiti holding  procession on April 7 and another procession being organised by the RSS on the Easter Sunday on April 9 and to direct them to hold such programmes on other dates.

“We see this is an attempt of these groups to divide the secularism of India and also an attempt to dilute the Good Friday and Easter Sunday celebration, which is very important day for the Christian community of the state,” the party said.

Passah however informed that despite the assurance from the deputy commissioner, a message by the Shree Hanuman Jayanti Utsav Samiti is being circulated on social media stating “due to unavoidable circumstances and permission received from the district administration, the Hanuman Jaynti Shobha Yatra is rescheduled to start from 8 am on 07-04-2023, Friday. Inconvenience caused is regretted.”

“Upon receiving this message, we again called up the DC over phone and told him that we have met him earlier today regarding the procession and that he had told us that permission for the same has been cancelled. On the message on social media that they have rescheduled the programme on April 7 itself, the DC said he also got the message and has communicated to the organisers that they should cancel the procession tomorrow,” he said.

“The DC told that they are still discussing but we feel that since  direction has come from the district administration there is no point for them to discuss but to follow the direction,” Passah added.
