Ronnie Lyngdoh resigns as Opposition Leader

Shillong, Aug 27: The lone Congress member in the Assembly, Ronnie Lyngdoh resigned as Opposition Leader (LO) on Tuesday.

The development comes after three Congress MLAs joined the NPP while the remaining  Gambegre Assembly seat is vacant after its representative Saleng Sangma from the Congress was elected to the Parliament.

The Assembly Secretariat issued a  notification also stating that the Assembly Speaker has accepted the resignation of Ronnie.

Ronnie was appointed as the LO in June last year.

The Speaker had used his discretion to appoint Ronnie as LO since the Congress, and TMC with five members each and VPP with 4 did not have the required number of 6 to claim for the post.

As the TMC is the single largest party in the Opposition with five members, the Speaker may appoint any member from the party as Leader of Opposition.

The choice will be between Charles Pyngrope and Mukul Sangma, sources said.
