Sarada Sangha celebrates platinum jubilee in city
Shillong, July 20: Sri Sarada Sangha, Shillong, celebrated its platinum jubilee on Saturday by honouring some prominent citizens and remembering the organisation’s contributions since its inception in 1955.
Educationist Uma Purkayastha, president of the Sangha, remembered the founders, Usha Bhattacharjee, former principal of Lady Keane College, and Prava Dutta, a teacher and social worker.
“We are a small organisation. Despite our struggles, our members do their best to support the poor,” she said.
On the occasion, the Sangha felicitated five citizens for their contribution to society and perseverance. Among them was Shefali Debanth, a domestic help who struggled to provide higher education to her two daughters.
“She is the epitome of motherhood,” Purkayastha said.
The others felicitated were Prabhat Kanti Pal, Jahanara Begum, Sona Chowdhury and Kakti Sangiang.
The Sangha is involved with several philanthropic activities. It has helped poor families during the Covid-19 pandemic and provided financial help for medical support. (Read: Sarada Sangha in city doing yeoman service for 69 years)
