Briefing reporters, the artist of the movie, Merlwin Mukhim, said that after travelling to several film festivals and receiving accolades, the team of Ha Lygkha Bneng – The Elysian Field is bringing the film home to Shillong.
According to Mukhim, the screening is special because it is not happening in a traditional cinema hall but in a community space that has been temporarily transformed into a cinema hall. It shows that cinema culture can grow even without infrastructure.
Ha Lyngkha Bneng is rooted in the land, people, and emotional landscape of the region, and bringing it back here makes the journey complete.
The film speaks about urban migration, ageing, loneliness, and the importance of community, themes that are very relevant to society.
The team hopes the initiative will encourage more filmmakers from the state to tell their own stories.
Unlike the cinema halls, the screenings at the auditorium are also an opportunity for audiences to experience a Khasi language film in a collective environment, something that has been rare for many years, said the director Pradip Kurbah.
“The support of the audience, students, and the media is crucial because cinema does not survive only through the film makers it survives through communities who watch and support it. The hope is that this initiative will inspire more film screenings, discussions, and appreciation spaces in Meghalaya in the future”, Mukhim said.
The team thanked Hello Meghalaya, the state’s OTT platform for the support.
