Search on for Lokayukta chairperson & members

Shillong, April 8: The state government wanted the search committee to get the names of chairperson and members for Meghalaya Lokayukta for approval by the government.

The retirement of B Dhar as chairperson of Lokayukta on February 28 this year necessitated the move of the government.

The committee formed by the government will have to submit the names within 30-45 days.

“We have requested the search committee headed by former IAS officer Peter Dkhar to complete the process at the earliest. We expect names to be submitted within 30-45 days. Once that happens, we will be again sitting in the main committee chaired by the chief minister and members are speaker, deputy chief minister, leader of opposition and chief justice of Meghalaya,” Chief Minister Conrad Sangma told journalists after the cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

The cabinet has also approved the amendment of the rules for the search committee by increasing the sitting allowances of its chairman and the members.

“Earlier the committee members used to get Rs 2500 per sitting and it was felt that it should be increased as it is only one or two meetings that took place. The amount has been increased to Rs 5000 for the members and for the chairman from Rs 3000 to Rs 6000,” he said.

Meghalaya Witness Protection Scheme, 2025.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma told reporters that the implementation of 3 new Criminal Laws i.e BNS, BNSS & BSA  mandated a Witness Protection Scheme to be implemented by state governments. A complete mechanism and laws have been included to protect witnesses as mandated

Amendment to language act 

Cabinet has approved the amendment of the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005.

As per the Meghalaya State Language Act 2005 either Khasi & Garo has been kept as local communications allowed as associate official language(s) and for various exams to be conducted in the districts. With the creation of the new Eastern West Khasi Hills district, necessary amendments had to be made to make the associate official language as Khasi in the district and include the new district in the provision.
