Search still on for city mountaineer & others missing in avalanche in Uttarakhand
Shillong, Oct 5: A mountaineer from the city has gone missing in an avalanche in Uttarakhand, on Tuesday.
He was part of a team of 41 trainees of Advance Mountaineering Course besides instructors of Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi.
The mountaineer has been identified as Tiklu Jyrwa (35) ,a member of Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA) .
The search is still on to trace the missing team
When contacted on Wednesday evening, an official with the NIM (training) said that the whereabouts of the trainee from Shillong is yet to be known.
They were struck by the avalanche while returning from the summit of Mt Draupadi Ka Danda II at Uttarakhand.
Jyrwa is the husband of the youngest sister of mountaineer Wallambok Lyngdoh, the general secretary of MeSCMA.
Jyrwa, a resident of Upper Lumapring, was sponsored by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs through MeSCMA for the advance mountaineering course.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma posted on social media, “Hoping and praying for the safety of Mr. Tiklu Jyrwa, a member of Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA), who along with a team of 41 mountaineers was hit by an avalanche at Uttarakhand yesterday. Rescue operations are on and we are in touch with SDRF Uttarakhand”.
