Second Living Roots Festival on Dec 2

Shillong, Nov 8: Tyrna Elaka and the Tourism Management Committee, Dorbar Shnong Tyrna Elaka will organise the 2nd Living Roots Festival cum quasquicentennial celebration of the Tyrna Elaka for two days from December 7.
The festival could not be held for the past three years due to Covid.
Sirdar of Tyrna Elaka, Andreas Wansai told reporters on Tuesday that the two-day festival is aimed at promoting the indigenous culture and tourism besides celebrating the 125th year of resettlement from the old Tyrna village to the present Tyrna village after the 1897 earthquake.
“The first Living Roots Festival was held in 2018 but due to various restrictions during the pandemic in the following years, we could not organise the 2nd Living Roots Festival on time and hence, it will be held this year” Wansai said.
He said various competitions in traditional dance, singing and cultural programmes will be held during the festival besides holding exhibitions to showcase various aspects of Tyrna.
‘Miss Living Root’ will be held for participants of the Shella constituency.
The cash prizes will be Rs 30,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000.
“Tyrna is home to the second longest living root bridge in Meghalaya which is around 85 feet and the Tourism Management Committee of the village also aims to explore more tourist spots in the region” Wansai added.
