
Shillong, Feb 19: Shillong MP Ricky Andrew J Syngkon (54) passed away on Thursday evening.
VPP leaders confirmed the death of Syngkon who was admitted in Roberts Hospital here.
According to sources, Syngkon collapsed while playing Futsal in Mawlai Mawiong.
Later, he was taken to Community Health Centre there but there was no doctor.
A doctor at the Roberts Hospital, said Syngkon was brought to the hospital at 7:40 pm and subsequently declared brought dead at 8.45 pm.
In 2024 general elections, Syngkon from the VPP had defeated his next rival Vincent Pala of the Congress by a record margin of 3,71,910 votes.
Academic turned politician
Syngkon secured a doctorate in small-scale industries from NEHU.
He completed all his studies at NEHU.
Dr. Syngkon joined NEHU as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce in 2002.
He was also a preacher and contributed to the Presbyterian Church.
His plunge into politics was after he and other like-minded people formed the Voice of the People Party, headed by Ardent Basaiawmoit.
The support for the new party was such that he defeated the three-time MP Vincent Pala with a record margin in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls
