The Agency for Sustainable Development Initiatives, K.J.P. Synod Sepngi organized the Shillong Run every year in the Shillong city since 2011. The history has always been an overwhelming, inspiring and successfully humbled experience. This initiative has immensely widen the awareness perspective about the so called, differently abled persons and the enlightenment about the brighter side of the precious gift of life and talents that God has equally bestowed upon them. It is worthy to note that thousands of participants, both men, women and even children have participated in the run and that has really proven the significance of the event. The impacts of the event have been huge and commendable supports have been garnered from the Government of the Day. And regardless of a very noble initiative that was brought into in first place; yet the outcome in terms of participation, support and willful contributions amongst the well-wishers and faithful of the Church have been very keen and positive. The funds thus collected or arising out of the conduct of the Shillong Run have really us in enhancing or improving the facilities, infrastructural set up of the Projects that the Social Economic Life Development Department, K.J.P Synod Sepngi through the Agency for sustainable Development Initiatives (AFSDI) has undertaken. One of the important areas of empowerment of Persons with Disabilities is their education. Inclusive education means that all students in a school, regardless of their strengths or weaknesses in any area become part of the school community. The main objective of this school is for ‘inclusive education.’ This is the first and the only inclusive school in the whole District of West Khasi Hills and Eastern West Khasi Hills District, which caters for Children with Disabilities. At present, there are 36 teaching and Non-teaching Staff and 569 students, out of which 55 are Children with Disabilities.
2. COMMUNITY BASED REHABILITATION PROGRAMME, MAIRANG: This programme works among Persons with Disabilities under six areas, that is, Staffing and Management, Needs Assessment, Education, Health, Social, Livelihoods and Advocacy and Empowerment. At present, there are 5 Staff and 215 beneficiaries under this programme and 14 Disabilities People Organizations (DPOs) were formed in the target villages. The main objective of this programme is to empower people with disability.
3. Rev. AMIRKHA SCHOOL FOR DISABLED, MAWLAI: Education is a powerful instrument of change in society, but there are certain barriers to the children due to their disability and acts as hurdles to prosecute their education at par with their normal students. In order to avoid such barriers, the Agency has introduced a special school known as Rev. Amirkha School for Disabled at Mawlai. The main objective of the school is to provide opportunities for Children with Disabilities as well as adults to avail of formal and non-formal educational services and vocational training programmes leading to their socio-economic independence and the enrichment of their self-esteem as human beings.
