Singer Zubeen Garg dies in scuba-diving accident
Shillong, Sept 19: Renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg died in a scuba-diving accident in Singapore on Thursday. He was 52.
Garg, who became a household name across the country after his song Ya Ali in the Bollywood movie Gangster, was in Singapore to attend the North East festival that is scheduled from September 19-21. He was supposed to perform on Friday.
Garg reportedly fell into the sea during an activity. He was rescued and taken to a hospital. But he could not be revived.
Former Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora wrote in an X post, “Deeply shocked and saddened by the untimely demise of our cultural icon Zubeen Garg. His voice, music, and indomitable spirit inspired generations across Assam and beyond. My heartfelt condolences to his family, fans, and loved ones. Rest in peace, Legend.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condoled his death and said the state and the nation lost a precious gem. “There is no word to express this loss,” he added.
