Sister of victim who died in Assam rehabilitation centre seeks CM’s help

Shillong, July 7:The sister of Niksamseng Marak, who died in a rehabilitation centre in Assam has sought the intervention of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

Achik State People’s Front (ASPF) said on July 2 that Marak travelled to Goalpara to purchase medicines prescribed by his doctor. On his return, he was detained by Krishnai police. Before his family arrived, the police sent him to the New Life Foundation rehabilitation centre in Goalpara without the family’s consent. When the family confronted the officer-in-charge of Krishnai Police Station, he was unable to provide a reason for the victim’s detention. On July 3, when the family members visited the rehabilitation centre, they were not allowed to meet with him except  his 4-year-old son. On the evening of July 4, the family members received a call from the rehabilitation centre  that Niksamseng died by hanging himself and later they informed that he died by banging his forehead on the toilet wall. Before post mortem, the family members checked his body and found deep cuts on his cheek and bruises all over his body.
