
Shillong, Feb 13: The Special Investigation Team headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of the Eastern Range in Meghalaya, Vivekanand Singh Rathore, has started a probe into the Mynsngat-Thangkso mine tragedy that claimed 32 miners.
When contacted, Rathore said the probe was on into various angles of the incident.
Though the SIT order was issued by DGP Idashisha Nongrang on February 12, the probe has already been initiated.
“In fact, on Saturday last, I had visited the area to assess the situation”, he said.
There are 62 pending cases on illegal coal mining in the district, he added.
The terms of reference of the SIT probe include the need to ascertain the cause and circumstances leading to the incident, to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the mining accident at Thangsko, East Jaintia Hills, to identify violations of court’s order/ NGT directions relating to illegal mining activities and to ensure that the investigation is carried out in a time-bound manner to bring the case to its logical conclusion and ensure delivery of justice in accordance with law.
