Six including four police women hurt in Mawkynrew clash

Local MLA clueless, refuses to speak to media persons

Shillong, Jan 20: Six people including four police women were injured on Monday during the clash between the police and the villagers, who protested against the decision of dorbar shnong to allot land for the construction of a school by the Ramakrishna Mission at Mawkynrew village.
The unrest led to police resorting to lathi charge and firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd following which East Khasi Hills district administration imposed curfew at Mawkynrew village.

The incident was result of anger over the allocation of land by the village authorities of Mawkynrew Pyllun to the management of Ramakrishna Mission, which is constructing a school in the area. Residents from Mawleiñ and Mawkynrew villages gathered to protest against the decision.

According to the protesters, th land was allocated to the Mawkynrew Sports Club for use as a playground but the decision to reallocate the land to the Ramakrishna Mission was made without their consent.

The protesters wanted to enter the construction site, and they clashed with police and the magistrate.

Despite police using  lathis and firing tear gas to disperse the crowd, the protesters became agressive resulting in injuries to many.

East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said four women police personnel and two members of the public were injured.

Additional forces have been deployed at the construction site to ensure law and order is maintained.

The local MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh avoided media persons following the incident considering the upcoming council polls.

He was at the secretariat most of the time on Monday. When journalists approached him , he refused to speak but assured that he will come back and speak to the press after meeting Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong but the MLA did not turn up.
