Injured man taken for medical treatment

Shillong, Aug 11: Police arrested the sixth Bangladeshi intruder in South West Khasi Hills border, on Monday.

The South West Khasi Hills SP, B Jyrwa said, “around 4:30 pm on Monday, information was received from the villagers of Kaithakona  that a sixth suspect has been apprehended”.

The intruder has been identified as Akram, a resident of Jenaghati village in Sherpur district of Bangladesh.

He was taken to Maheshkhola PHC for treatment as he suffered grievous injuries, the police said.

Hek for action against infiltration 

Later, speaking to reporters, Cabinet minister AL Hek wanted the government and stakeholders to prevent influx.

“It is duty of the government and duty of even individuals also to ensure that influx should not take place in the state of Meghalaya,” Hek told reporters.
On the arrest of Bangladeshi nationals for attacking a villager in the border areas, Hek said it is the government’s responsibility to inform the Central authorities about the influx from outside the country.
“The various agencies, including the police and Border Security Force (BSF), are working to prevent influx,” the minister said.
Hek also welcomed the proposal of the government to come up  with a new legislation or mechanism to protect Meghalaya from influx.
KSU prevents influx in Laban 
The Khasi Students Union (KSU) Laban Circle has detained six suspected Bangladeshi nationals after they were found residing in Oxford Hills without valid documents and claimed to have entered Meghalaya through tourist taxis, posing as tourists.
A statement issued by the Union on Monday said two individuals were first apprehended on August 10 at Oxford Hills, and further investigation led to the apprehending of four more persons. All of them failed to produced valid documents.
“Such people have entered Meghalaya through tourist taxis by identifying themselves as tourists.”
Shajahan Ali, a contractor from Assam, was found to be instrumental in bringing these individuals into Meghalaya and was subsequently pushed back to his place of origin.
The KSU has warned house owners in the area to refrain from renting their properties to outsiders, especially in light of the ongoing eviction drive against illegal immigrants in neighboring Assam.
The six apprehended individuals have been handed over to the Ribong Beat House police for further action.
The Dorbar Shnong of Laban is conducting a survey to identify how many people without valid documents are residing in the locality.
The KSU has threatened stern action against those providing shelter to such individuals.
