Sohra Deputy Syiem stresses need for policy for tourists’ security

'It's a relief after weeks of blaming locals for the crime'

Shillong, June 9: The Deputy Syiem of Sohra, Marremdor Syiem, told Meghalaya Monitor on Monday morning that there is a need for a policy so that all visitors to Sohra can be registered.

Syiem said it was a relief that the case was solved with the surrender of Sonam Raghuvanshi, who masterminded the murder of her husband, Raja.

The newly-wed couple went missing on May 23 and Raja’s body was found at Weisawdong in Sohra on June 2. NDRF and SDRF rescuers, along with a few locals, were carrying out search operations at the site.

Last week, Sonam’s brother, Govind Raghuvanshi, who was in Meghalaya, alleged that his sister was kidnapped and trafficked. The national media had been reporting that Sohra was a crime-prone area, hinting that locals were behind the crime.

“We are relieved to know that Sonam surrendered. I condemn this heinous act, and I extend my condolences to Raja’s family. At the same time, we are proud of the Meghalaya Police. For the last few weeks, everyone was blaming people here and giving a bad name to the place,” said Syiem.

The Deputy Syiem said that there is a need to lay down a policy so that “we can register all the visitors’ names, and we can track them”.

“We need to wake up. Now, all stakeholders — including the state government, the police and the local bodies — need to work hand in hand so that we can ensure utmost security in the area,” said Syiem.

He also emphasised the need for solving the dispute over Weisawdong between the two villages, Laitduh and Umblai. The case went to the High Court that sent it to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, which in turn directed the case to the Hima.

Syiem said the dispute needs to be resolved as early as possible so that everyone can come together to secure the place.
