Speaker for June 2026 deadline to complete new Assembly

Shillong, Dec 8: Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma reiterated June next year as the deadline to complete the construction of the new Assembly at Mawdiangdiang.

A comprehensive review meeting on the ongoing construction of the building was held here on Monday afternoon.

The review was convened to assess the progress of the construction and address key issues related to the execution of the project. The speaker noted that the regular monthly review mechanism has contributed significantly to improving monitoring and the steady advancement of work.

Speaking after the meeting, Sangma said, “I am happy to share that the meeting was very productive. With these regular review meetings, we can monitor progress closely and identify what needs to be done as the construction moves forward.”

The speaker reaffirmed that the timeline for the completion of the main Assembly Hall remains unchanged, with June 2026 set as the target. He added that once the main hall is completed, Assembly sessions can be convened at the new complex immediately thereafter.

Sangma also informed that he will conduct an on-site inspection of the project on December 11 to personally assess the pace and quality of construction work.

The meeting was chaired by the Speaker,  with Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Parliamentary Affairs,  Prestone Tynsong, also in attendance.

Commissioner and Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Andrew Simons, and senior officials from the Finance Department, Parliamentary Affairs Department, PWD (Buildings), NIC Meghalaya, and the officials from Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat were also present for the meeting.
