Participants will be trained in natural as well as artificial climbing by experienced climbers of the association as well as a veteran international player from Manipur. The camp will have participants who are over six years.

“You would be happy to know that the first two Assamese mountaineers, Tarun Saikia and Manish Deka, to conquer Mt. Everest were from our association only,” said Debaprotim Lakhar, general secretary of Assam Rock & Sport Climbing Association, which was formed in 2005 and was formally registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, in 2006.

Apart from hardy mountaineers, this sport is now enjoyed by men, women and children of all ages and from all walks of life. In fact, this parallel form of competitive climbing was included in the recently concluded Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and included in the last Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta.

“With the sole objective of promoting sport climbing amongst the youth and children of the state, and to bring out their budding talents and prepare them for future competitions, we are organizing this sport climbing orientation camp in November 2021,” said Lakhar.

“In this camp, the basic objective will be to make the participants aware of the different formats of climbing (natural and artificial)… there will be three formats of sport climbing — lead, speed and bouldering,” he added.
