Judicial inquiry commission to probe mining incident

Shillong, Feb 9: The state government  has decided to institute a judicial inquiry commission under the Commission of Inquiry Act to investigate the mining incident in Mynsngat -Thangsko area in East Jaintia Hills.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced this on Monday.

A government statement said that following the loss of 27 lives coupled with injuries to nine others on February 5 , the state has been actively coordinating relief, rescue, and follow-up measures.

“Emergency response teams, including  the district administration, police, State Disaster Response Force, and National Disaster Response Force, were deployed immediately. Search, rescue, and recovery operations were carried out under challenging conditions to ensure that all affected individuals were accounted for and received timely medical assistance”, he said.

Ex-gratia assistance has been announced for the next of kin of the deceased, and continued support is being provided to those injured, the government said.
