State rejects demand to restrict outside tourist taxis

Shillong, Dec 16: The state government has rejected the demand to restrict outside tourist taxis, citing legal infeasibility. Instead, it will convene a meeting with hoteliers, resort owners, and tour operators to promote the use of local tourist taxis.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the deputy chief minister in-charge transport Sniawbhalang Dhar with a delegation of the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) on Tuesday.

The association had requested restrictions on outside tourist taxis, but Dhar said this was not legally feasible.

“As per law, it is not legal to stop outside vehicles from coming to the state, so they understand properly. The Advocate General (AG) had stated that it is legally not allowed to stop outside vehicles from coming to the state,” he said.

The government has agreed to request hoteliers and tour operators to engage local tourist taxis.

“We will call owners of hotels, resorts, and tour operators and request them to utilize the service of local tourist taxis,” Dhar said.
