State seeks community participation to fight drug abuse

Shillong, Oct 17:The state government wanted community participation in its fight against drug abuse in the state as the current rules very often prevent public participation.

“We will go for amendments and framing rules under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (PITNDPS) Act,1988 to facilitate community participation in the fight against drug menace”, Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh told reporters on Tuesday.

Members of over 10 traditional institutiona under West Shillong constituency took part in the meeting.

According to the minister, issues relating to instances where witnesses have to turn up in court several times year after year have become a big deterrent for the participation of the community.

Plea to detention order

The police have also submitted a proposal for issuing detention orders for 9 cases relating to repeat offenders under sections of the PIT NDPS Act.

“We have asked the police to resubmit the proposal strictly as per checklist as it has to be accurate and there should not be any mistake because order given under PIT NDPS Act by the authority will go to the advisory board afterwards. We have put in a detailed checklist and the police in the next few days will be submitting this proposal and we will issue the detention order,” said an official of the social welfare department.
