Shillong, Feb 27: The HNLC cadre, who surrendered before the police, was involved in luring youths, along with Bangladesh-based HNLC cadres, to join the militant group

In a statement issued on Friday, the assistant inspector general of police ( Administration) said the active HNLC cadre Samuel Wahlang Pahsyntiew @ Samuel Wahlang, s/o (L) Edwin Lyngdoh Mawnai & Beryl Wahlang Pahsyntiew, a resident of  Umpohwin, Out Post Mawlasnai, Ri-Bhoi district, surrendered to the Superintendent of Police, Eastern West Khasi Hills District,  on February 25 in the presence of his family members, village authorities and senior police officers.

He is suspected to be involved in the IED blast near the Syndicate Bus Stand, close to Harijan Colony, Iewmawlong, Shillong, on March 9, 2024, and many other similar acts in the last few years.

According to the police, during examination, the surrendered cadre revealed that he, along with some Bangladesh-based HNLC cadres, had been trying to lure young people to become members of the unlawful association in the last two years.

“Based on other information, a case vide CBPS (ER) Case No. 01(02)2026 u/s 3(5)/61(2)/113(1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)/147/148/308(1)(3)(4)/351(2) BNS has been registered and two cadres, who were involved in planting the IED in Umsning market on October 12, 2025, which was later recovered and defused safely, were arrested from Umsning, Ri Bhoi.
Police are yet to reveal the names of the arrested persons.

Regarding the surrendered cadre, the police said further action is being taken in accordance with the law and the surrender policy of the government.
